Street Captains Program
Be a Street Captain Super Hero!
The Street Captain program was started in 2004 as a part of the Oakland Mills Revitalization effort. At it's essence the idea is that one or two people on each street, block, or building knocks on their neighbors door once per month and has a conversation with them! We realize that in this time of less connections between neighbors that this may sound like a radical idea.
The Street Captain hands out a monthly calendar and fliers for upcoming community events. But most importantly the program supports neighbors in "Living Locally" and encourages those intangible connections that really make a village a village.
The Street Captain role takes about 1 hour per month. Here's how it works:
- You select the homes that you want to cover. How many or how little is up to you.
- You recieve an email that your calendars are ready for pick up on or around the 22nd of the month.
- You pick up your calendars at The Other Barn.
- Between the 22nd and the 3rd you distribute your calendars.
Easy! And a great way to get to know your neighbors or deepen your relationships with them. It will make you feel good! And a more connected neighborhood is a happier and safer place to live.
In addition we meet once per quarter at The Other Barn for our Quarterly Street Captains Meeting where you will hear speakers, get special information, and get to be on the cutting edge of what is what in Oakland Mills. The next meetng will be held: Sat., February 20, 2010: 9:30am breakfast at The Other Barn followed by the meeting at Columbia Teen Center (next door).
