Poker Run Information and Rules

May 19, 2018, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Thank you for you participation in the Oakland Mills 50th Birthday Kickoff Celebration Poker Run.  We hope you enjoy the routes we have chosen and learn something new about Oakland Mills along the way.

There are 4 possible routes that a participant can choose.  Each route will start and stop at The Other Barn in the Oakland Mills Village Center.  All of the routes use CA pathways and public streets.  Each participant is responsible for practicing safe and legal cycling procedures.

The four possible routes are listed below:

Route 1:           Stevens Forest Neighborhood                                          4.1 Miles

Route 2:           Talbott Springs Neighborhood and Blandair Park      6.5 Miles

Route 3:           Lower Thunder Hill                                                            8.6 Miles

Route 4:           Upper Thunder Hill                                                            11.6 Miles

Each participant must register at the sign in table that will be located on the side of The Other Barn.  Registration begins at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 19th and will be open until 2:00 pm on May 19th.  To participate, the fee is $5.

Please note that the $5 fee is for those over 21 to participate in the “poker” portion and receive poker cards along the route.  There is no fee for those under age 21.  We welcome participants of all ages.

Upon payment, the participant will be given a 3×5 card and will fill out his/her name, phone number and email address and what route he/she is selecting.  The participant is then given the card back to carry with him/her to each station.  The participant will then be given a map of the routes with each of the four routes highlighted in a different color.  This sheet will also include written directions as well as interesting sights to note along the way.  There will be arrows drawn along the way to help follow the route.

There are a total of 5 designated stations, The Other Barn Registration table, being the first and the last station.  Each station will have an attendant to give the participant their card as well as water if desired.

Below is a listing of each of the designated stations:

  1. Outside The Other Barn
  2. Pushcart Way Pond (Off of Camelback Road in Stevens Forest)
  3. The wizard stump on Macomber Lane (in Stevens Forest)
  4. White Acre Cemetery (off White Acre Road in Talbott Springs)
  5. Outside The Other Barn

As the participant ventures through the route, whichever route he/she has chosen, he/she should stop at each of the designated station to pick a card and add to his “poker hand.”  The last stop is back at the registration table at The Other Barn.  At this stop, the participant will pick out his last card for his “poker hand,” complete his 3 x 5 card and turn it in.  The card will be held until a winner is determined based on the best poker hand at the community picnic at 5:30 pm in the Courtyard.  The winner will receive 50% of the total money received.

You do not need to be present to win.

You must be 21 years old to play “poker,” but anyone can ride, skate or run the routes.
