From The Village Manager’s Desk

Oakland Mills is hOMe to a diverse population of 10,000 residents who collectively make our cOMmunity the community of choice. OM residents engage in important community conversations about what connects us all – our schools, our village center, our parklands and playgrounds, our neighborhoods, and most important our overall feeling of wellbeing. Community is built on communicating and conversing with one another. Some conversations start by one neighbor talking to another, by a resident attending a village board meeting and/or community event and giving remarks. Other conversations take place over a cup of coffee or at the Sunday OM Farmer’s Market. It’s great to start a conversation and awesome to have that conversation spark action.

Conversations that led to community discussions and ultimately became issues we are actively involved with include but are not limited to: equity in our schools (advocating for equality in every aspect of our schools from building infrastructure to programming and resources to meet the needs of every student); traffic and pedestrian safety issues; community safety; village center and community vibrancy; transparent architectural covenant enforcement process; Blandair park and the positive impact park activities can have on our community; CA Open Space management; Bridge Columbia and our connection to Columbia’s downtown; BWI airplane noise concerns; residential and apartment housing issues; and exciting and inclusive cultural activities. Our list is long and varied.

Conversations are healthy, and we need more of them. Our board, staff, and volunteers are committed to making Oakland Mills the best village in Columbia. We need everyone’s voice and participation.  Join us this year at our board meetings, which are the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. You are welcome to join to conversation or just to observe. Some of our greatest leaders started out by sitting in the “spectator section” and now have joined the conversation and led the discussions. Join us at whatever participation level you are comfortable with. We will always welcome you.
